Give The Referees A Break

A familiar pattern has emerged in the championship and the year as a whole, as we have seen and heard of many instances in the past number of weeks where the match referee, the linesmen, the umpires and the fourth Official are subjected to enormous levels of abuse which cannot be considered normal by anyone’s standards. 

The majority of the abuse is a behaviour which has been engrained from a young age, a decision goes against our team and our anger is directed at the referee. Many times however the abuse takes on a sinister tone and it’s important to remember that the match officials are amateurs who are carrying out their duties out of a love for the games themselves.

The Gaelic Match Officials Association has been formed as an Independent match officials body to look after the welfare of All GAA match officials including referees and umpires from all codes including Camogie and Ladies football. We felt that it was time that a national match officials body was formed to look after the interests of match officials at both a local and national level as we felt that many concerns and issues which match officials face on a regular basis were not being addressed appropriately particularly at local level.

Referees Expenses to be Taxed

Any referee in receipt of un-vouched match expenses will have to make a tax return to the Revenue Commissioners for 2012.

While the GMOA welcomes Croke Park’s decision to reopen negotiations with the Revenue Commissioners on the procedures for the taxation of referees match expenses for 2012, we also welcome Revenue’s clarification stating that the Revenue Commissioners do not set the rules in relation to any monies paid by the GAA to its referees. It is important to note here that the revenue expects each individual in receipt of a payment from the GAA to adhere to their individual tax obligations for 2012, the majority of match......
